We Are The Champions!

My Yahoo! Fantasy Football team, the Rhode Island Rabbits, have won my league’s Super Bowl! We are the champions of the world (or at least the dinky online league I’m in)! Final scoring went like this:

As you can see, I absolutely housed 5YardsOut 102.38 to 86.98. While not the highest scoring game of the week, it was more than enough to seal my victory late Sunday night with all hope for my opponent gone by early Tuesday morning as the final regular season game of the NFL year wound down in OT.

I took the league by over 100 points overall:

Rank Team W-L-T Pct Pts Streak Waiver Moves
*1. Rhode Island Rabbits 10-4-0 .714 1430.08 W-7 7 8
*2. 5yardsout 8-6-0 .571 1306.62 L-1 4 10
*3. Brooklyn Dodgers 8-6-0 .571 1340.52 W-1 1 4
*4. really da really 8-6-0 .571 1282.38 W-1 2 11
5. doobie brothers 7-7-0 .500 1301.28 W-1 9 16
6. League Champs 8-6-0 .571 1137.16 L-1 10 22
7. ICRMBWNHB 6-8-0 .429 1277.78 L-1 6 12

10. DOmers 4-10-0 .286 985.18 L-3 5 13

I put together a stellar eight wins in a row over the last eight weeks. All in all, I’m very happy with the results. My team had arguably a great season. This season will certainly be built on and incorporated into next year’s effort.

In the meantime, I’ll be sitting and waiting for MLB Baseball to begin so I can resurrect my Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball team (also the RI Rabbits) and try to better last year’s fourth place finish.

For now though, I’m going to bask in the glory of victory and brag all I can about my football expertise. Having said that, I still have no idea who half the people are on my team. All I know is they made me win and that’s all that matter I guess in the end.

RI Rabbits Go To Super Bowl!

Fireworks and Football... sweeeeeeeeeet.

Fireworks and Football... sweeeeeeeeeet.

Literally just in minutes ago, my Yahoo! Fantasy Football team the Rhode Island Rabbits are going to my league’s Super Bowl! I managed to pull off a one point win in the semi-final championship game (102.34 to 101.68) against Really Da Really during the last eight minutes of the NY Giants game. This puts me up against my arch-nemesis 5YardsOut who just won 116.42 to 111.88 against the Brooklyn Dodgers. 5YardsOut is a tough team, but you can be sure I’m going to try to pull every trick out of the bag to win this one. This is for all the carrots!

I’m sporting a 11-4 record for the entire year and going on eight straight wins so I’ve got momentum on my side. This is pretty exciting as this is the first time in the last three years I’ve been playing fantasy sports that I’m actually headed into a final championship match.

All will be said and done in one week when the points are tallied and only one team is left standing. Here’s hoping it’s mine.

RI Rabbits Head Into Semi-Finals

RI Rabbits Helmet (Home Color)

I’m happy to announce my Yahoo! Fantasy Football team, the Rhode Island Rabbits, have made it into the semi-finals play off match. Final regular season standings ended my team with an excellent ten wins and four losses, as well as, the most total points in the league. I easily clinched last week play off status and this past Monday grabbed number one seed spot in the final regular season game. Overall standings look like this as of today:

Rank Team W-L-T Pct Pts Streak Waiver Moves
*1. Rhode Island Rabbits 10-4-0 .714 1430.08 W-7 8 8
*2. Brooklyn Dodgers 8-6-0 .571 1340.52 W-1 1 4
*3. 5yardsout 8-6-0 .571 1304.42 L-1 4 10
*4. really da really 8-6-0 .571 1282.38 W-1 2 11
5. League Champs 8-6-0 .571 1137.16 L-1 5 19
6. doobie brothers 7-7-0 .500 1301.28 W-1 10 15
7. HTOWNHARDHITTAZ 7-7-0 .500 1185.78 L-2 9 12
8. ICRMBWNHB 6-8-0 .429 1277.78 L-1 7 12
9. cowboys21 4-10-0 .286 1203.50 W-2 3
10. DOmers 4-10-0 .286 985.18 L-3 6 13

Play offs start this Thursday and are lined up as so:

Week 15
(Dec 15 – Dec 21)
Week 16
(Dec 22 – Dec 28)
Final

Since I grabbed first place with a clinch (in other words nobody could bump me) I got to play the number four team instead of the normal number three. Hypothetically that allows me to play the weakest team in the play offs and thus give me an edge.

If you look at the prediction of stats though you’ll see my opponent “Really da Really” has quite a team and they are far from easy to beat (though I have done it in the past three weeks). Right now we match up with me having a slight edge (103.14-102.69) but those number are constantly in flux (it was actually flipped 102 to 103 with Really Da Really in the lead earlier this morning). I clobbered them 128.92-73.18 in our last meeting. They did manage to beat me early in the season in a heart break win 73.66-70.18. Either way, this is no cake walk game and all the beans are on the line.

I’ll let you know whether or not next week if I make it into my league’s Super Bowl final or not. Wish me luck!

Braggadoshiah – RI Rabbits Take First Place

Rhode Island Rabbits (Away Helmet)

Rhode Island Rabbits (Away Helmet)

I’m happy to announce that my Yahoo! Fantasy Football team, the Rhode Island Rabbits, have taken first place in my league as of this morning! Yahoo’s leagues run sixteen weeks total (the regular NFL football season) with the first fourteen dedicated to regular season place, week fifteen to semifinal play offs of the top four teams, and week sixteen with the final “Super Bowl” game determining the league champion for the year between the two semifinal game winners.

The league uses real NFL players’ game statistics for a given week (week runs Tuesday through Monday) to compile a score. You are rank first by how many wins you have. I have six wins and four losses right now– anything over .600% is consider good with .500% being average and below .400% being bad. When you tie others by win rankings (notice there are four others teams with the same win amount as mine) those aforementioned player statistic points are used to sort who is better than who in the tied group of teams. I’m at the top with 980; some twelve points ahead of the number two team.

Here’s the current standings in the league as of this morning:

Rank Team W-L-T Pct Pts Streak Waiver Moves
1. Rhode Island Rabbits 6-4-0 .600 980.00 W-3 9 8
2. Brooklyn Dodgers 6-4-0 .600 967.20 L-1 1 4
3. 5yardsout 6-4-0 .600 923.12 W-1 4 10
4. really da really 6-4-0 .600 900.84 L-2 2 11
5. League Champs 6-4-0 .600 828.78 W-1 5 16
6. ICRMBWNHB 5-5-0 .500 981.34 W-2 7 12
7. doobie brothers 5-5-0 .500 961.02 L-1 10 13
8. HTOWNHARDHITTAZ 5-5-0 .500 813.56 L-1 8 9
9. DOmers 3-7-0 .300 674.40 L-2 6 13
10. cowboys21 2-8-0 .200 831.48 W-1 3

This is my first year playing fantasy football, but I’ve being doing fantasy baseball for two years now (my Rabbits Baseball team finished in fourth place this year) and those same statistics/scoring skills carry over into football. I am not, admittedly, a football expert though I do follow weekly highlights and game stats. As I’ve always said, when you grow up and feel too old for AD&D role playing you graduate to fantasy sports to make yourself feel “cool” though obviously you’re still a pretty big nerd. I mean come on, the whole thing is mathematics (statistics, law of averages, logic tables, and chance determination) like chess so if you are good at it and won’t admit you’re a nerd you’re lying to yourself. 😀

Basic math says that if you win eight of fourteen game (or roughly .571 winning average) you are almost 100% assured of placing in the top four positions. Having said that you really want to win as many as possible and accrue as many points as possible because of the aforementioned ties by wins (we’re a very close league and anything can happen in these type of less than twenty point spread situations).

This week I play the cowboys21 team listed above. They are the “worst team in the league”, but if you look at their line up they have an incredible roster of players. The problem is many of them have spent the year hurt until now. There is the bigger problem– he has a team of great players very healthy who could turn an upset very easily. Prediction odds say I will come out ahead (105 to 90 points) according to the Yahoo! prediction math nerds, but anything can happen on any given Sunday as they say. A fifteen point spread on prediction is still pretty close (anything under twenty is close) so we’ll see what happens.

If anyone is interested in Fantasy Baseball (starts in April 2010) let me know. I’m contemplating running a public open league this year in addition to the closed invite only league I participate in. It will be head-to-head league (similar to the style of league above) hypothetically and it would be pretty cool to get some df.com contributors and viewers duking it out for the championship. Drop me a line via comments on the post if you’re interested. We’ll follow up with you from there via email (be sure to put your valid email address I can contact you at in the comment line– don’t worry it’s never shared for marketing purposes to third parties nor will it be used for marketing purposes by df.com or displayed in the post itself).

Countdown to Extinction

With surgery looming some 12 hours away tomorrow morning the reality of things is finally starting to set in. Perhaps the biggest concern I have right now is the unknown– specifically just how much recovery time will I need and just how the Hell much will I regret this decision when I’m laying in bed 48 hours from now in complete agony? Like most things, only time can decide. I ask that you be patient and hang in there– I will be back to update the site further as soon as I am physically able to do so even if it’s just a “Hey, I’m alive” message.  I’d like to also thank all of you out there who sent me get well wishes through email, via one of our social network profiles, and for those of you who know me more personally via phone.  Your thoughts and get well wishes are appreciated.

Some of you may have noticed (if you live in the area of my hometown) that the recent edition of the “Warwick Advertiser” (one of Warwick’s hometown newspapers) “Where In Warwick?” feature was won by one certain history nerd you may know:

Frank Forester Memorial in Warwick NYWHERE IN WARWICK?
Congratulations to Maureen Byrne, Darlene Brozowski, and Christopher Welch, who correctly identified last week’s “Where in” clue. Welch provided some history with his answer: The image is from the Forester Monument found on the corner of Colonial and Maple Avenue in the Village of Warwick. Specifically it is Mr. Forester’s mustache and mouth. “The monument is dedicated to author Frank Forester (aka Henry William Herbert) who wrote the book ‘Warwick Woodlands’ (published 1839) among other noted works. “Forester was an avid outdoors-man and spent many hunting trips in the Town of Warwick woodlands. Forester preferred to stay at the old Wawayanda Hotel, which today is gone (once stood where today the Mobil Station near the monument is), hence the placement of this monument. “One side of the monument was originally a horse drinking fountain, but today is dry– serving as more of memorial to a bygone era. There is a plaque recounting the above achievements of Forester on a rock just behind the fountain. If I recall correctly, they were erected at different times with the fountain being placed first and the stone with the Forester plaque being placed second. I believe the fountain side had ties to the Civil War and was supposed to commemorate the fallen soldiers from the Town of Warwick (who are often referred to in writings from the era as the ‘Warwick Boys’).”

Yes, I have that much spare time– the verbiage is actually from our Beyond DF project on the Google Earth BBS. Check it out when you have spare time (info on how to locate my posts on that site are explained in the aforementioned Beyond DF section).

“Paranormal Activity” is now in official national release and if you still are interested in checking it out (the search results are still pushing around 25 people a day to this very site– sooooooo yeah) be sure to look on Fandango to find out where you can find it near you. The movie right now is listed as number three in active movie viewership rankings and has raked in over $20.1 million USD. Reports peg the film production at less than $11,000 and if this is the case that’s a significant return on investment. Nice job boys. Nice job.

Another article that has resonated with our viewers is our recent “Here Comes Droid For Verizon” article. Again, this is mainly driven from searches and one can only gauge the sheer buzz growing around the launch of this handset. Thanks to DJ ADD for pointing out the Moto Sholes hardware is actually globally available and that means Verizon will potentially not be the only provider with access to a Droid mobile smartphone variant of their own.

For those of you who know me very well– you know I love baseball. As such, I spend way too much effort on my Fantasy Baseball team (the Rhode Island Rabbits). I once heard that Fantasy sports is what AD&D nerds grow up to do to seem less geeky, but in all reality are only more geeky because of it. This is probably true as I was a big AD&D fan growing up and now here I am obsessing over who’s on the DL and who’s going to raise my team RBI to nudge me a point or two up in the rankings. Having said that I finished fourth in my league out of eleven. This was a big achievement considering last year I was in last place in a thirteen team league.

Now my Rabbits are moving on to Fantasy Football with the NFL season in full swing. It’s a public Yahoo! league so you can follow my stats in real time (though I doubt you have as much free time as me right now soooooo… yeah).  Right now I’m sixth out of ten with a 3-3-0 record. Last place here I come!
