I Am The Definition of “Lazy”

I know what you’re saying– there’s been no News updates for like five days. What’s up with that? Well, if you’ve been staring at the DF.com Code Info page on a daily basis (I doubt you have– really I seriously hope you have better things to do) you’ll notice we’ve crept up everyday a few code revisions and are now at df.com version 11.6.1c. Most of that work has been seamless background web page engine tomfoolery such as:

  • I upgraded web engine to latest WordPress code to fix known exploits with Flash and Flash image upload tools to insure security best practices are maintained.
  • I did updates to various widgets and plug-ins that run our site’s many features such as the Artwork gallery, the script optimization tools I use to speed up web page loads, the security tools I use to keep the site from going down, and the comment anti-spam tools I use to keep the comments free of spammers and scammers.
  • I moved the DF Pirate Radio FAQ to the Music sub-menu for consistency/logical organization (previously under the About DF.com sub-menu). I also updated page’s content to reflect some better MP3 players that have come out since the page was originally authored.

More notably (and of entertainment value) I added additional videos to our YouTube channel, which can also conventionally be browsed on our site in the Videos section. Our YouTube channel has also been branded in our color scheme. We now have 36 videos in our channel including some of my seminal favorites from Skinny Puppy, Chamillionaire, Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, and Jay Z. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Physically, I’m feeling a lot better. My range of motion and endurance is improving every day. Therapy continues to help a lot. So lack of updates has not been because of that. I guess the main culprit has been all the background work I’ve been doing on the site and our various third party social network profiles, as well as, my continued focus on my rehab exercises and PT visits.

Don’t be fooled though by the appearance of laziness because of lack of main page News updates. If you dig around on the site you’re always sure to stumble upon my latest experiment or some new content. You just never know what you’re going to find and you’re always sure to be surprised as to what I’m up to. Keeping it fresh; that’s what DF.com does best!

DF v11.0.6 Update

I continue to work on the site as whole with small tweaks and fixes as things crop up on the radar. We right now have no open bugs and are on df.com version 11.0.6 (final) code wise. The most recent fixes:

  • Upgraded back end web site engine code to latest WordPress engine to “harden” site against attacks and improve performance/stability.
  • All plug in modules that enable features are 100% up to date as well.
  • Implemented additional back end security checks and database configurations that improve site security while not degrading performance.
  • Optimized all page load times and database structure to speed up/maintain quick load times on all web browsers.
  • Improved search engine including result sorting for better search returns (both quicker and more relevant based results instead of sorting articles by time line from most recent to earliest). In other words, you’re more likely to find what you’re looking for quicker instead of having to read every search result (similar to how Google and Bing work).

Today marks one week since my shoulder surgery was performed. Still sore, but over all feeling about 30% of my total self again. Finally starting to have some control over my right lower arm (below the elbow). In less than a week I have my post operation follow up with my orthopedist. Hopefully the wound is healing is a good as it seems to be. Cannot wait to get the bandages off and to be able to take real showers again.

DF.com V11.0 Final Released

I’m happy to announce we have finalized and generally released version 11.0 final of digitalflood.com. This concludes our public Beta. Thank you again to all of you who helped out with development and gave feedback. Together we have built a product I’m very proud of. We’ll begin moving now onto other projects (including the return of digitalflood Pirate Radio) along with continuing to improve the site, as well as, add features over time. I’ve moved the code tracker to its own page (which can be found here or under the “About DF.com” sub-menu “DF.com Code Info”). And with that– it’s time to start the second decade of df.com. So it begins again anew!

Odds & Ends

Susan G. Komen For The CureAs we move onto df.com version 11.0_RC(2.5b), I’ve been hard at work on some code clean up:

  • Improved site caching to speed load time
  • Optimized code for Google Searches (among other search engines)
  • Fixed Star Rating & Comment system (was actually trying to speed up load times when I broke it)
  • Upgraded theme code improving cross web browser functionality

We also ran into some anomalies linked to background server tasks that were bogging down late night load times. I’ve move some of those various maintenance jobs off from peak hours and so far so good.

We’ve actually been taking on a lot of traffic because of my recent “Paranormal Activity” blog. I’ve somehow ended up number four on Google when you search for “paranormal activity movie leak”. I apologize to all those who came here looking for pirate movies (having a web show called Pirate Radio cannot help things either), but unfortunately I have no more info than the meager amounts given out by all the mainstream media outlets.

The Pirate Radio Facebook Group is taking off. At last check earlier today, we had 57 members in the group and that’s not bad for two weeks with little/no advertising about it. As always, word of mouth has proved to be our biggest friend when it comes to marketing the site.

Long term feedback is great so far for the new site layout and features. I’m getting a lot of kudos from people when I run into them and it’s good to know the majority of you like the new site.

Last, but not least– this month you will find a pick ribbon on the left side of the web site. We’re supporting the efforts of The Susan G. Komen Foundation. October is breast cancer awareness month. The Komen Foundation is a key supporter in searching for a cure for breast cancer and helps raise awareness for those most at risk (including educating both men and women how to proactively locate tumors through routine check ups etc…). This is a cause both near and dear to my heart. My father died of throat and mouth cancer back in 1998. His mother (my grandmother) died of breast cancer. His father (my grandfather) died of lung cancer. Obviously cancer research is very important to me and my family. There are very few of us out there who do not know someone who has survived cancer or died of it. I hope you’ll join me in showing your support and if possible sending donations via their site to help them continue their good works.

Near Final Revisions

Good news– was able to fix the “CAPTCHA code” lay out issue this evening after all. Also made updates to the image gallery code and web frame code. Everything looks good as it stands and we’re almost ready to go final release. This is definitely good news in light of my earlier post. Of course, if you do find anything wrong or have any suggestions be sure to let me know.
