Title: Vol. 6 Episode 3 (Click link to play) | Rel: 1/21/10 |
Description: “Absolut Pimping @The Disco!” – MC Mary @ The Disco! turned twenty one years old on January 17, 2010. That turned out to be a Sunday. The original plan was to record a mix session ahead of time and then record the live interludes at the bar during her birthday party. The mix session went well enough (and is the actual session you’ll hear here), but that’s about all that went right. First it got really icy out and down poured the whole night of the birthday party putting a kabash on any plans to record at GW’s Pub & Grill in Chester, NY. Then when we moved the party to Fratello’s in Warwick, NY it turned out that even though the next day was Martin Luther King Jr. day that most of the Chaos and Fiesta Crew had to work the next day– thus only a limited number (read: five) of people turned out.
Things started looking up when DJ digitalflood and MC Mary’s brother Tom knew the bartender. The drinks started and that itself proved to be a problem (more on that in a bit). There were also an odd number of older middle aged folk at the bar who insisted on blasting bad glam rock thus further kabashing any plans to record live. So we resorted to drinking and that lead to MC Mary consuming enough alcohol to kill an entire herd of moose. That didn’t complicate the party itself (which was fun enough either way), but it did kill any plans to record the next day. Exhausted by a long weekend, DJ digitalflood took the next night off from production and was only able to catch up later in the week to actually mix the raw live session into the final cut you see here. Now given all of this, this episode should be an absolute disappointment at the disco– it is not though. What you are about to listen to is the finest “Cut Like Crack” mix session to date. It breaks all boundaries of rock, rap, and everything in between. It is part noise experiment and part dance party soundtrack. It is an accumulation of all that DJ digitalflood has mastered over the course of the last year. It is at times raw. At times confusing. But when things come together there is an undeniable sense of absolute perfection at the disco. And so, the session is published as a stand in for the MC Mary annual Fiesta Party mix, but in no way is it a poor substitute. This is the real deal mix. Enjoy. |

DF Pirate Radio – “The Worst of 2009”
Title: Vol. 6 Episode 2 (Click link to play) | Rel: 1/12/10 |
Description: “The Worst of 2009” – Every now and then we do a show to recap the worst songs of a given year. This happens to be one of those shows. This volume’s “Worst Of” episode we recap the absolute worst songs (and artists) of 2009. It’s the way we like to ring in the New Year– by maliciously tearing into every artist who released a lame track during the previous year. How brutal is the show? DJ digitalflood manages to within the first five minutes offend not only MC Mary @ The Di$co!, but his wife (Cee Money) as well. Things escalate from there. In the first ten minutes he offends several major religions, one or two racial groups, and possibly the human race in general. When the show takes a wrong turn at the “Beyonce Hovah” reference it’s all down hill from there.
The next thing you know rappers are hanging out with gender confused pop stars to crochet sweaters and proto-black artists who threaten to transform your face by beating it in are mixed into post-grunge crap rock. There’s some transgendered dance music, the most likely to OD movie stars list, and DJ digitalflood calling just about everyone in pop music a douche. MC Mary @ The Di$co announces her favorite birthday hobby to make things even more awkward (Hint: It’s not birthday Facebook messages). It should get better from there, but it doesn’t. There are several screaming matches and even MC Mary @ The Di$co insisting her name includes a money sign (hence the spelling for this week), but at the end of it all 2010 looks like it can only be better than 2009– all things considered though with a playlist like this there is no realistic way where it could be worse! The show rings in the New Year at over two hours long and depending on your taste is a great mix to party to or a bunch of stuff to make you want to puke. Either way you’ll be entertained by some of the funniest arguments to date. How funny is the show? We suggest you don’t listen to it while drinking any beverage to avoid drowning– it is simply that hilarious. |
DF Pirate Radio – “The Dance Dance Resolution”
Title: Vol. 6 Episode 1 (Click link to play) | Rel: 1/04/10 |
Description: “The Dance Dance Resolution” – It’s the start of another year at digitalflood Pirate Radio and as we head into Volume 6 for 2010 there is no better way to start things off then to do it shaking our booties! This week DJ A.D.D. joins us once again to bring us the latest in popular Electronica from “across the pond”. DJ A.D.D. doesn’t let us down– he has compiled what is his most bad ass playlist of Dub Step, Jungle, Electro-synth, Drum n’ Bass, Garage and Grime styles to date. So go grab yourself a warm beer, some fish and chips, and God save the Queen if she hears this one. It’s time for a New Year’s resolution of a different kind: We promise to dance until we drop. Not even a trip to the ER and a severe case of stomach flu could stop DJ digitalflood from digging into this one. Yes, even medical emergencies didn’t curb his enthusiasm and stop him from digging into what is simply the best dance pop set to ever hit the decks of the Pirate Radio virtual turntables.
Special moments abound including the official world premier of DJ A.D.D.’s new project called “Soap Box Nation” and a special visit from DJ digitalflood’s two year old daughter, DJ Emma In The Playpen! It took some eight hours to make this session. Though only one was spent recording it and another two producing it. The other three hours were spent on the Internet drooling over electronic instruments and watching YouTube clips of DJs mixing sets with Yamaha Kaoss Pad KP3s. We also watched a two hour plus long DVD. Nevertheless, the beat of the force is strong with this one. If we don’t get your foot at least tapping we’re pretty sure your dead– consider heading right over to your local undertaker for embalming. Let’s get into it! |
DF Pirate Radio – Cliffnotes (2009 Season)
Cliff Notes – 2009 Season
* The latest edition to the digitalflood Pirate Radio arsenal for 2009 is a new M-Audio XSession Pro MIDI controller, which when coupled with Atomix Virtual DJ allows DJ digitalflood to mix music in real time seamlessly during live mix recorded sessions. Take a listen and see if you can hear the difference?
* Literally an hour before recording “Oi Vai, This Ain’t Kosher (Vol. 5 Episode 2)” of DF Pirate Radio, DJ digitalflood dislocated his left shoulder. DJ digitalflood had been recovering from shoulder surgery on his right shoulder and this left his collar bone imbalanced. The result is his other shoulder popped out and left DJ digitalflood in some major discomfort all of an hour before recording was to begin. Nevertheless, DJ digitalflood and Reverend Damian Baker recorded the show (albeit at a slower pace). You cannot even tell what happened and indeed this only proves the dedication the cast has to the show.
* Reverend Damian Baker is really converting to Judaism. The good Reverend has previously grown up Roman Catholic, became Methodist as a young adult, and had family who was Presbyterian. He’d spent the last few years as a Unitarian Christian before deciding to seek a Rabbi and proceed down the path of Judaism. Reverend Baker spent his early college career studying Christianity and was actively looking into becoming a Protestant Minister. That was about the time he met DJ digitalflood at SUNY Orange (circa 1996) where they were both members of the WOCC Radio Club and deejayed on the station.
* M’Weezy is really studying to become a Registered Nurse and in her second year at college. This makes her availability spotty during the course of this Pirate Radio season (Volume 5) as classes continue to intensify and take up more of her free time.
* Groucho really did get MC Mary @ The Disco! with a static shock on her butt during the recording of “The Groucho That Stole Christmas” and no– DJ digitalflood didn’t teach him how to do it.
* DJ digitalflood’s house is pretty small. It has two floors comprised of approximately 500 square feet. The first floor is where Pirate Radio is recorded during seasons four and five. The floor plan is fairly open allowing audience guests to sit in the living room and watch the radio show be recorded in the computer area. Other times guests sit over by the dining room table, which is on the other side of the recording area. The kitchen is just beyond the dining room and as pointed out by MC Mary @ The Disco! has a rather slippery waxed surface.
* Just prior to recording this season, Sheeva passed away of terminal lung cancer in the Spring of 2009. DJ digitalflood dedicated “The Beat Feast 2009 Redux (Vol. 5 Episode 3)” to her memory.
* 2009 marked ten years of digitalflood.com and 2010 marks five years of Pirate Radio (there have been six seasons, but one was only an episode long– in 2007 DJ digitalflood went on hiatus to get married and have a kid hence the one episode season). This season DJ digitalflood did a lot of reflection on his DJ and audio production experiences that lead up to this milestone. “The Slighty Unpleasant Dream After Hanukkah (Vol. 5 Episode 4)” is a nod to DJ digitalflood’s exposure to the underground goth and industrial club scene, which molded much of his remix sensibilities early on. Meanwhile the “flAnneljAm: After Dark (Vol. 5 Episode 5)” is a nod to his early deejay and radio production education during his college years. Each was important in shaping DJ digitalflood’s Pirate Radio show and arguably without those influences the show would not exist today.
* digitalflood Pirate Radio is still produced on the same computer used when the show started in 2004. Last year additional memory was added. This year the main hard drive failed and had to be replaced. Otherwise, the computer system is nearly the same as it was in 2004. Regardless of this, overall audio production quality has noticeably improved thanks to updated software production applications and additional new recording equipment, as well as, an overall improvement in production techniques used by DJ digitalflood himself.
DF Pirate Radio – “The Groucho That Stole Christmas”
Title: Vol. 5 Episode 6 (Click link to play) | Rel: 12/29/09 |
Description: “The Groucho That Stole Christmas” – It was supposed to be a quiet Christmas Eve of settling down by the tree and listening to carols while sipping a nice glass of wine. Just when DJ digitalflood thought the highlight of the night would be Santa Claus stopping by to drop off presents for his family, MC Mary @ The Disco! shows up. With that the chaos begins– throw back womanizing jokes, off color humor, and outright back alley gossip ensue. It’s all down hill from there. To top things off Groucho attacks the radio broadcast and tries to steal Christmas. All the songs in Welchville cannot stop him, but when all is said and done the true meaning of Christmas is found thanks to some high pitched rodents singing about a hula hoop.
In the grand tradition of digitalflood Pirate Radios of the past, this year’s episode is no different in many ways. It’s plus sized at one hour and forty one minutes of total run time. One DJ is under the influence and one is an outright bad influence on their own. The jokes will at times make you laugh and other times make you cringe in shock. Yet, it’s bigger and better than every DF Pirate Radio Christmas show before it. We’ve freshened things up with some new Christmas tunes that will serve as a suitable background to any White Trash Christmas morning. In short, it’s the gift that keeps on giving– even when you wish it would stop. So get out your egg nog and make one last toast to old Saint Nick before the New Year comes. It’s holiday time at the Pirate Radio and no one will be nestled in bed with dreams of sugar plums dancing in their heads. But there will be mentions of Gabriella Bush and Dr. Done Get It Dot Com. As well as, some ice skating in the kitchen and Ebola for all! |
